Customer Need/Request:
This playground at Windsor’s Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital was exposed to direct sunlight, creating a need for effective shade to help protect children from harmful UV rays. The customer wanted a durable, reliable shade solution that would provide substantial coverage over the playground, creating a cooler, more comfortable recreational environment for children.
Manufacturing & Installation Overview
Design & Scope of Work:
For this project, the Sun Shade Co. team designed, manufactured, and installed 2 customized shades from our Super Shade Series, adapted to fit within the parameters of the existing play area.
With a limited footprint, we knew it wasn’t going to be possible to install 6 steel posts to support this shade structure, so to accommodate this unique space, we installed 3 colour-coordinated wall mounts in combination with 3 steel posts to secure the shade sails and ensure correct tension is maintained.
To properly install the steel posts, the direct bury method was used. Our install team augered holes for each of the 3 posts, and poured each footing around the posts, achieving the clean through-the-ground look you see in the photos. Direct bury installations allow minimal distruption to the existing ground surface which was a requirement for this customer’s space.
These shade sails were manufactured in our Lakeshore Ontario facility using Royal Purple Gale Pacific Commercial 95 fabric, and finished with Sunbeam Yellow powdercoated steel posts. All materials were selected to match the fun colour scheme of the pre-existing play equipment, now protected from the sun in an aesthetically pleasing way.
Thank you to Hôtel-Dieu Grace Hospital for the opportunity to shade this outdoor children’s play area!
