Why the City of Waterloo Needed a Shade Solution
With its wide-open expanse of concrete, Waterloo Public Square lacked adequate shading, making it uncomfortable for visitors during the warmer months. The goal was to create a more inviting outdoor environment that would encourage year-round use while protecting visitors from harmful UV rays.
After evaluating different options, the City of Waterloo chose Sun Shade Co. for our expertise in custom-designed, made-in-Ontario shade structures. Our innovative approach included moveable concrete bases that allow for seasonal adaptability, along with fast and efficient delivery.
Our Custom Solution
For this project, we successfully designed and manufactured two blue single-post umbrellas, delivering exceptional coverage.
A unique feature of these shade structures is that they are fixed to movable concrete bases. During the winter months, it’s essential to relocate them to a protected area for proper storage. This innovative design ensures that the area remains functional and adaptable throughout the year, providing shade in the summer and clearing space for winter activities.
Our team ensured that the materials were built to endure strong winds, heavy rainfall, and hail during storms, all while showcasing an aesthetically pleasing design.
The installation was successfully completed in time for the summer months, and it took some time to see a remarkable transformation in the area. Within less than 30 minutes of the installation, we began to notice an increase in the number of visitors and local residents enjoying the large shaded spaces. This had a positive impact on the community, as more people took advantage of these enhanced outdoor environments.
